I have recently moved to West Somerset from Gloucestershire in search of a wilder landscape. I draw inspiration from walking, painting and taking photographs, often returning to the same places to paint, as the light, colours and shadows are always different. In the studio I work on canvas and board, with oils, acrylics and watercolours, taking elements from photographs and paintings I have done in the landscape.
Following a trek in the wild and remote mountains of central Iceland in 2001, I created a series of paintings inspired by this experience. These paintings give a sense of the way that the climate, weather and volcanic movement have shaped the geology of the land over time, giving a vision of the eternal existence of the landscape. The Icelandic landscape has continued to have a profound influence on my work.
The weather is also a source of inspiration. I try to capture a sense of the essence of the transient and intangible atmospheres that are created in the landscape as the weather changes from one moment to the next.
