Further Info

I'm 57, a self taught artist and have worked full time as a landscape painter in oils and watercolour for the last 6 years.

As the last model of the Polish Expressionist Henryk Gotlib in the 60's I expect some of his passion for light and colour influenced me, but although I have painted throughout my life - encouraged by having a painting hung in the Junior RA when I was 8 - it has only become the predominant passion within my life since 2000. What I recall vividly is my fascination with and my seduction by the landscape at a very young age. It was and still is somewhere I seek refuge and solace, inspiration and excitement. I particularly love exploring in the Autumn and Winter months when the tress are bare and a more architectural quality reveals itself.

I find as the years pass a desire to express this passion in different ways. Although at times I still paint figuratively I feel that a simpler expression of colour, form, balance and emotion are hammering away in my sub-conscious. Perhaps it is inevitable after studying the same landscape over a number of years that your relationship with that landscape undergoes changes and that it becomes necessary to adopt a new language to express those changes. I almost feel that I am painting in reverse. I begin, not knowing exactly where I am going - with a sense of 'place' but little idea of where I am going. Often what marks I make appear wrong - but until I have gone wrong I can't put it right.

I know Horace wasn't particularly referring to painting when he said "a task is easy, once begun, for half the work is thus done." but it could well apply to my struggle to find a starting point.

For the time being I suspect my work will be pretty eclectic as I explore new forms of expression alongside my more traditional methods in which I seek to convey simple contrasts of light and shadow and the characteristic colours which identify a particular location.

I show work at a number of galleries in the South West and exhibit as part of Somerset Art Weeks. More examples of my work can be seen on the SAW website under D.

I accept commissions on a very loose brief and my work can be viewed at my studio in Wiveliscombe by appointment.
