I was born in Taunton and was raised in rural Somerset. After college I spent 2 years travelling then running a restaurant in India, before moving to work in Ireland for a year.
After I returned to England, I worked for Sunshine Designs, based at Hurstone Farm, Waterrow, making decorative furniture, clocks, and accessories and assisting with rug designs. This sparked a love of strong colour and pattern that often emerges in my work. The company sadly moved to Sussex, and I spent a long period with the civil service, until having a baby prompted a career rejuvenation! I spent a year studying painting and drawing with Sue Luxton, and then a year on the Fine Art Access course at SCAT, where I was awarded a Student of the Year award in 2006. I am currently studying for a degree in Fine Art at SCAT.
My two dimensional work is primarily focused on colour and texture. I like to develop a strong sense of mood with close tones and subtle variations. I prefer to explore my subjects from an emotional viewpoint, rather than through formal representation.
I am also very interested in working with found objects, having been influenced by the works of Joseph Cornell, Robert Rauschenberg, Kurt Schwitters and local artist Louise Baker. I love to reuse old things, to give them new life and meaning, and love the whole concept of artistic recycling – ideas, images, objects. Most of my degree work has been in the form of assemblage or installation. These pieces again explore emotions and memories, through a common language of everyday objects, things lost or broken, forgotten or no longer wanted. While they are created as very personal artefacts, I hope that they have a broader meaning, or at least the opportunity for other personal interpretations for each viewer.
For details of other shows, projects and images of my work, past and present, please see my website – www.skymango.com
My work is regularly featured in Roots, Bath Place, Taunton.
